Approved-installer status means the manufacturer registers the warranty on your roof. Without it, the membrane goes down the same way but the warranty paper is essentially worthless.
Most flat-roof fitters in the UK are not approved installers. They can buy the same membrane and lay it the same way as anyone else — that part is mechanical. The real difference shows up when something goes wrong eight years in. Manufacturers like Cure It, Elevate, and Flex-R only honour their warranty if the job was registered by an approved installer at the time of fit. Unapproved fitters can give you a piece of paper with a guarantee printed on it, with their company name at the top — but the manufacturer is not on the hook. When that fitter has gone bust, retired, or simply stopped answering the phone, your “20-year guarantee” becomes worthless.
